5simple and elegant
By Sukumar A. Srinivasan
I own the usual Citizen Eco-Drive (#BL5180-57L). While I in truth like the watch for it is aspect and commodious size, it has a complex dial, and an even complex scheme to navigate. Moving into dual-time, or alarm mode is so onerous that I plainly stopped using all the features. The dial is dark blue that almost looks black at some angles.
I wanted a watch that was rather the opposite – white with a simple Day-date dial face. I wanted one that required no batteries (kinetic, eco-drive or automatic), steel band and WR to some degree. I have 6 3/4 ” wrists, so I eradicated dials more spectacular than 40mm. I also wanted stainless steel band, not titanium because the latter, altho refined and tasteful and light, just lacks the right amount of macho, in my opinion :) .
I searched high and low. On the internet, jewelery stores, chains like Sears, Macy’s, but just couldn’t find anything that met my criteria. For a great deal of reason Citizen Eco-Drives plainly do *not* have white dials (except the one Railroad watch, but that has red markings that I did not want, all others have grey or silver-gray faces). The seikousa internetsite had some good watches, but again not one thing that met my criteria. It may be a syndication cycle – these days people probably prefer the heavy chrono watches.
Most swiss watches were out of my budget, altho I was getting so frustrated with my search that I contemplated Tissot, and Tag Heur. But I didn’t think they were automatic at any reasonable price range.
I in the end found a heap of seiko watches on bluedial that I liked and that’s when I stumbled all over the “Seiko 5″ watches. It was like stumbling upon lost treasure! These watches are so simple, functional, graceful and lowcost and for a great deal of unfathomable reason you may neither find good specs nor reviews on them.
I short-listed a bunch of white-dials on bluedial and in the long run by the routine of elimination, arrived at this SKA01 model. While the price on this watch was far under my budget, the price on amazon handsomely beat that on blue dial so I ordered one from here, sold through Justcalculators. The picture here is terrible – the watch looks much more elegant. Search on google images and you will find a good deal of in truth good pictures on ebay.
I was a bit reverse-worried at the cost of the watch, that it may look ‘cheap’ at 70 bucks. I was so happy when I got it (shipped very quickly by justcalculators). The face was precisely like I wanted – simple, elegant, with very clear, bold black, yet unobtrusive, day-date. The dial was in regards to 38 mm, again perfective for a 6.75″ wrist.
Now here is the share regarding the band. It is not very heavy like the eco-drives. It is the ‘older’ kind that may be laid flat (the eco-drive links are short and tight and retain their shape when off your hand) and it does not have the safety clasp. It has gaps amidst the links. But the band DOES NOT look cheap. It has a brushed appearance, the links are significantly thick (not thin like stilettos), and because of the gaps, light in weight, making it comfortable to wear it all day long.
I have had it for with regards to 4 days and no problem so far, and I don’t suppose any from a valued brand like Seiko. It takes when it comes to 3/4 day of continuous wearing for the battery to get totally charged. The sweeping seconds-hand looks elegant.

5Buyer beware: Amazon sells used watches.
By Joel Tunnah
First a warning, then the watch review.

For the fourth time now, Amazon has sent me a applied (or returned) watch. See my review of the casio PAW1300-1V. I know, I swore I would never buy another watch from Amazon after this happened three times in a row – but this Seiko was sold by an Amazon collaborator and “Fulfilled by Amazon”. So I thought I would take a peril to save thirty bucks over other online dealers. Well, it turns out that “Fulfilled by Amazon” means they will send you the same applied watches I was getting when I purchased “Ships from and sold by Amazon”. This SNKA01 had scratches on the bezel, no crystal or band cover, smudges and fingerprints on it, and no warranty card. In my book that’s a “used” watch. Amazon is running a deceptive business as far as I’m concerned. I returned this one, just like the others, and no doubt a good deal of other sap is going to get this same watch sent to them. Never again, for real this time. I reordered this watch directly from a reputable online Seiko retailer. It came in it is basi packaging, with film protectors on the crystal, underside, and band; it came with the warranty card and Seiko hang tags still attached; it was clean. Amen.

Now the review: I’m genuinely thrilled with this watch. It is 37mm, which a lot of websites are not clear on. The finelooking dial is not white paint – more like a pearl metal with numerous subtle reflectivity to it. Nice lume on the hands and hour marks, which lasts around an hour after turning off the lights. The back has a crystal on it so you may see the 21-jewel 7S26B movement. This is the update of the 7S26 “workhorse” that increased accuracy. Mine loses two seconds each 24 hours, which I find to be special for a hundred dollar watch. I leave it on all day, except in the shower, and I have not gone out of my way yet to wind it by shaking, etc. The only negative is the band, which is folded sheet metal links and a little cheap. But at a quick glimpse it looks nice, and is reasonably comfortable, so I have decisive to leave it alone. 5 stars, taking into account the cost.
