Christopher Wicks, the architect and creator of all things English Laundry®, was born a child of the Sixties in Manchester, England–The Centre of the Universe. In his very early years, he found console sketching what he remembers mainly to be shirts, shoes & guitars.
His coalminer father often times remarked to his mum, “there’s something faulty with that kid, he must be outside kicking a ball.” What begun as a preteen past time, however, became a life long career in the designing of men’s & women’s apparel.
His basi full time architect position came at the early age of 22, when he was the architect of men’s formal shirts for one of England’s greatest gentlemen’s shirt manufacturers. The passion for stripes, collar shapes, pearl bu ons and French cuffs that he gained for the duration of these years stayed with him allround his career which finally led him away from gentlemen’s apparel to the more in-demand realm of Sportswear.
He then went on to design such sport wear brands as a Licensee as L.A. Gear, Ocean Pacific and Hang Ten. Wicks’ design career is ever evolving, moving with the fashions of today while staying unfeigned to his rigorously specified and refined and tasteful shirt making roots.
Since leaving his Home land of England a heap of 22 years ago, Mr. Wicks has resided in Hong Kong and the U.S. and presently lives in Los Angeles where he pursues his passions for rock ‘n’ roll, open top cars, motorcycles and, of course, fashion.
Under his company banner, Defiance USA Inc and Rock & Roll Religion, Wicks now designs and makers all the costume for the world famous guitar company, Fender®; as well as Jimi Hendrix “The Experience”, A Clothing Collection; Da Vinci, the firstborn men’s wear collection since 1952; and what is now the jewel in the his Defiance crown, English Laundry® with it is now synonymous tag line, Elegant ARROGANT and English™.
Wicks is obsessed with Fashion, Music and his hometown of Manchester, passions that are apparent all around the collection of graphic t-shirts such as “Manchester—the Centre of the Universe”.
The English Laundry® shirts and designs are based on chosen English Stripes, Plaids and Solid Poplins from the1960s and1970s the era in which the when he grew up. His style ranges from Mod Hip to Hippie Floral and beyond. His designs are embellished, embroidered, hand-laundered and hand-sewn. The hand laundering is a key feature in the fit and ease of the garment.
Mr. Wicks remunerate outstanding homage to both his hometown and country by incorporating the Official Manchester Crest and images of the lions from the Manchester Town Hall awning in his designs.
