Except for a handful of awkward verses, the bouncy rhymes accentuate the slapstick and capture the boy’s eagerness, feeling of annoyance at being hindered or criticized and (at last) snug bliss. Garland (The Mouse Before Christmas) follows the text’s light-hearted lead with computer-generated illustrations that recall Toy Story in the sculpted-clay look of figures and objects. The narrator’s melon-size head sits atop a diminutive body, and his geometric world sports utterly round bushes, with vibrant backgrounds featuring strong patterns. But the stylized approach diminishes the tender conclusion: in his mother’s lap the boy appears stiff and his expression seems almost vacant. Aside from the chilly visual wrap-up, however, the story must elicit a heap of giggles. Ages 3-6.

From School Library JournalPreSchool-Grade 2-A young boy describes his dilemma: he has a new book, but can’t seem to find a comfortable and quiet place to read it. Like Goldilocks, he finds respective seats too small, too chilly, too wobbly, or already occupied. The singsong verses describe how he rejects one spot after another as a spring in the old armchair comes loose under him, a lawn sprinkler turns on next to him, and his brother’s beanbag chair explodes beneath him. The lighthearted art has the flat look of computer graphics, and some of the images seem more or less out of focus. Despite a adequate for the purpose ending (the boy and his mother read together in a snug chair), the overall effect is wearing, as the slight, single-minded plot hardly manages to sustain interest. Still, young readers will get enjoyment from exploring the colorful details that fill this child’s world. A mixed crusade that’s mildly appealing.

Reminiscent of Daniel Kirk’s work, the crisp, comical illustrations, featuring a redheaded boy and his unread book Silly Bird, are a winning match for this tightly rhymed saga of seeking and finding. Can’t Wait to Read…..

“A new book for me-/I can’t wait to read!/I run to my own little chair./I’m growing too tall and the seat is too small,/So I am not comfortable there.” Now where is the perfective place for our young narrator to read his new book? He looks all over the house and even outside, but can’t rather find just the right spot. Grammy’s soft, snug chair is being employed by Rover, and he’s not sharing. Daddy’s chair is underneath the cold, blowing ceiling fan, and his brother’s beanbag chair has sprung a leak. The kitchen’s too sticky and messy, Grandpa’s chair has sprung a spring, and even though the backyard is warm and sunny, the sprinklers come on as soon as he settles in and now it’s too wet out there. “I arid myself off./I give up, I can’t read./I’ve tried to sit down everywhere./With no reading done, I’m still on page one-/I can’t find a comfortable chair!” Debbie Bertram and Susan Bloom’s clever, rhyming text is engaging and full of bouncy energy, and complemented by Michael Garland’s bold, bright, and playful illustrations. Wonderful poetry, magnificent pictures, and extremely pleasing message. This is a must-read for all little kids and their parents.

sweet book

I was looking for a first/baby book, this one is for someone a little older. I would read it to an older toddler – 3-4 years old. It’s got a sweet premise, with a child looking for the best place to read, and engaging drawings. I just wanted a less complicated book and ended up not giving this one as a gift, but donating it to my local school instead.
